Ocean Beach Abalone (Pāua) Farming History

Land based aquaculture Abalone (Pāua) farming is a growing industry in New Zealand which began in the 1980s as small scale farms and have developed into commercial sale operations. At one stage there were 14 Abalone aquaculture farms operating in New Zealand, now only two are in existence. NZAC is the only one located on the South Island of New Zealand.

There is a high world wide demand for farmed abalone due to the decline in wild stocks and the increasing demand for sustainable food supply. Farming allows a constant supply of abalone with higher quality meat and shells in a sustainable environment.

The team at Ocean Beach have been raising Ablone since the 1980s under the guidance of Pāua farming expert David Corbin. Production ceased in 2008 due to the price decline in Abalone. The farm is now back up and operational under the guidance of the same team of dedicated professionals.

The Ocean Beach farmed Abalone are raised in tanks, on land, in water directly from the clear waters of the Foveaux Strait, directly to the western side of the farm, and fed only locally harvested seaweed.
